Non-Profit Designation Statement

GOA-US has been designated as a charitable organization by the IRS (under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue code), and is thus required to follow specific guidelines. By law, GOA-US can not simply serve as a conduit of funds to GOA because GOA is a foreign organization.  In order for GOA-US to retain our status as a tax exempt organization (and, in turn, for donations to GOA-US to be tax deductible), donated funds (a) must be under the control and discretion of GOA-US, and (b) must not be for the benefit of a specific individual.

GOA-US has established a strategic plan which identifies specific projects which advance the mission and objectives of GOA-US.  Attached is the list of specific projects and associated budget for 2009.  In keeping with IRS guidelines, GOA-US can only accept undesignated donations or donations which are designated for the projects identified in the GOA-US strategic plan.  GOA-US is not able to process donations intended to benefit individuals in Kenya.  Donors may provide such funds directly to GOA-Kenya or to the individuals, but such donations would not likely be deductible for US tax purposes. (Note that GOA wishes to set up an account, like PayPal, for the purpose of accepting online donations to individuals).

Administration Expense

Although most of the efforts to administer and support GOA-US are provided by volunteers (Board members and others), tthere are certain expenses required to properly fulfilling our fiduciary responsibilities.  This requires that GOA-US initiate an administration fee.  For the past year, all of our administrative expenses have been funded by certain donors.  In order to be able to meet operating expenses (e.g. processing & wiring funds), and pay for capital projects (fundraising events, GOA audit, website development/maintenance), a 4% administration fee is being put into effect.  We are dedicated to being good stewards of your donations, and we believe these funds will improve our effectiveness in serving you and GOA.  Complete financials of GOA-US including administrative expenses are available at any time and will be posted on our website.
